Dr. Andrés Abreu earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and upon graduation was the recipient of a Fulbright award for study in the Czech Republic. Dr. Abreu obtained his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in 2013 and completed his psychiatry residency at Maine Medical Center in 2017. Dr. Abreu also received fellowship training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and hospital-based psychotherapy at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

After completing his training, Dr. Abreu worked at the Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine where he served as medical director, precepted medical students from Tufts University School of Medicine, and supervised psychiatry residents from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Abreu was on the clinical faculty at Tufts University School of Medicine for nearly a decade and he is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Abreu is employed at Acadia Hospital.

 

Specializing in psychodynamic psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, Dr. Abreu's practice focuses on the biological, psychological, and social contributors to complex psychiatric problems. He has received extensive training in multiple evidence-based psychotherapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, good psychiatric management, mentalization-based treatment, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and transference-focused psychotherapy.


Dr. Abreu is a board-certified psychiatrist and is a diplomate of the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
